I am a red man. If the Great Spirit had desired me to be a white man he would have made me so in the first place. He put in your heart certain wishes and plans, in my heart he put other and different desires. Each man is good in his sight. It is not necessary for Eagles to be Crows. We are poor . . . but we are free.

Sitting Bull, Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux

One of the most important aspects of philosophical theism is found in those last few words from Sitting Bull: “We are free.” Freedom and free will, distinction and some level of autonomy, are the only things that make relationship possible, and these critical issues are what make theism distinct from the other three worldviews. C. S. Lewis says it like this:

God created things which had free will. That means creatures which can go either wrong or right. Some people think they can imagine a creature which was free but had no possibility of going wrong; I cannot. If a thing is free to be good it is also free to be bad. And free will is what has made evil possible. Why, then, did God give them free will? Because free will, though it makes evil possible, is also the only thing that makes possible any love or goodness or joy worth having. A world of automata—of creatures that worked like machines—would hardly be worth creating.[1]
